You hate to admit it, but visiting the dentist is a frightening thought. Maybe it’s even kept you from going to appointments in the past. What if there was a way you could have a more enjoyable experience in the chair? It may sound too good to be true, but sedation dentistry may be the answer you’ve been looking for, but it’s natural for you to have questions about this miracle solution. Below you’ll find some of the most common questions about sedation and responses that should put your hesitation and fears to rest.

What Kinds of Sedation Are Available?

Although other forms of sedation exist, the most common are nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. Nitrous oxide, which is sometimes called “laughing gas,” is inhaled through the nose and begins to take effect within minutes. It doesn’t necessarily make you laugh, but it will help you feel at ease and comfortable.

A stronger sedative, oral conscious sedation consists of a pill that is ingested about an hour before the appointment. By the time you arrive, you should feel completely relaxed and ready for whatever treatment you’re undergoing.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is often used for those who face severe anxiety or fear of the dentist or of dental procedures. Through these sedatives, patients can receive necessary services, ranging in complexity from basic cleanings to complex dental implants.

In addition to calming dental anxiety, sedation can also help patients who have exceptionally sensitive teeth or gums as well as those who have a strong gag reflex. These sedatives can surmount these impediments and make dental visits more tolerable and pleasant for many patients.

Will Sedation Put Me to Sleep?

Nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation do not forcibly put you to sleep; however, some patients find themselves so relaxed that they fall asleep during the appointment. Plus, oral conscious sedation can have an amnesiac effect, which means you may not be able to recall details from your visit, even if you stay awake and responsive the whole time.

What Are the Side Effects of Sedation Dentistry?

The side effects you’ll experience depend on the type of sedation you receive. One of the best aspects of nitrous oxide is that its effects go away just as quickly as they kick in. As a result, you should be back to normal within a few minutes and able to return to your day without lasting side effects. On the other hand, oral conscious sedation does take a few hours to get out of your system, which means someone will need to drive you to and from your appointment.

Now that you understand a bit more about sedation dentistry, hopefully you feel confident in finally taking care of the dental work you need. Just be sure to ask your dentist about your sedation options! They can answer any further questions you have and help you have less stressful appointments.
