Veneers or Bonding: Making the Decision Easier

The average person makes roughly 35,000 decisions every day. Some are simple and require very little thought, such as following your routine and brushing your teeth before you leave the house for work. Others, however, can be more challenging. If you want to correct visual flaws in your smile, you have an important decision to make: should you go with veneers or cosmetic bonding?

Although both are great options, you have to choose which will best help you achieve your desired smile. Here is some information to help you decide with confidence.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are porcelain shells that cover the front of your teeth. This material has the same reflective qualities as real enamel, which means the veneers look completely lifelike. Veneers treatment is usually completed in two separate appointments.

The first is the preparation visit, where your teeth are slightly reduced, and impressions are taken. Temporary veneers protect your teeth while the lab fabricates your permanent veneers. Then, you go back to your dentist’s office to have the final products bonded in place, creating a perfect smile!

When Are Veneers the Better Option to Choose?

Compared to teeth whitening, veneers are much more versatile, meaning they can correct several types of imperfections—not just the color of your teeth. These durable shells are more stain resistant than real teeth. Also, if you are looking for a longer-term cosmetic treatment, veneers can last around 15 years before requiring replacement, as long as you take good care of them like you do your normal teeth.

What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Cosmetic bonding, also sometimes called direct or dental bonding, takes advantage of the same material as fillings. This composite resin is made of fine ceramic particles and a dental plastic, forming a putty-like substance. As a result, it can be custom colored and sculpted into whatever desired shape, making it just as versatile as veneers.

Once the resin has been applied over the tooth and formed, a curing light solidifies it. Then, your dentist refines it by making it smooth like tooth texture.

When Is Cosmetic Bonding the Better Option to Choose?

Unlike veneers, which usually require two appointments, bonding can usually be done in just one. It doesn’t require making a permanent change to your teeth, so if you change your mind, the bonding can be removed later. This option is also more cost effective, but you need to keep in mind that the results typically don’t last as long as veneers.

If you are still struggling to make this decision, remember that you don’t have to make it on your own. Your dentist is a great resource for information, and they can let you know their recommendation and help you determine the best treatment to give you the smile you’ve always wanted.
