Unveil the Mystery: 4 Myths about Dental Sedation Busted

myths vs facts

To someone unfamiliar with dental sedation, it can seem a little mysterious. A nervous patient is given a sedative and then is magically more relaxed. They may wake up later and realize their dental work is already done or have problems recalling their time in the chair. Consequently, many myths circulate about dental sedation, but here is the truth behind them!

Myth #1: Dental Sedation Will Put You to Sleep.

Just as certain medications may have different effects on different people, sedation can affect patients in various ways. As a result of oral conscious sedation, some may feel so relaxed that they fall asleep. However, many remain awake, although they may not remember details from the appointment. Nitrous oxide won’t put you to sleep either, but it tends to make patients feel warm, comfortable, and calm.

When you tell your dentist you would like to have sedation, just be sure to mention any and all medication you are taking, allergies, and your medical history.

Myth #2: Sedation Only Helps with Anxiety.

Although managing anxiety is usually the main reason behind using dental sedation, it is not the only one. If a patient struggles with sitting still, has a sensitive gag reflex, has sensitive teeth, or is afraid of needles or injections, sedation can make their time in the chair much more pleasant and tolerable. As a result, it may be beneficial for you to ask your dentist about sedation, even if you don’t have a lot of dental anxiety.

Myth #3: Sedation Can Only Be Used in Complex Procedures.

Although many patients who undergo more complicated procedures—like implant placement or root canal therapy—take advantage of dental sedatives, you may be a good candidate for sedation even for routine services like checkups and cleanings. It all depends on your anxiety levels and other individual needs!

Myth #4: Dental Sedation Is Only for Adults.

The sedatives used in dentistry can be gentle enough to use on children and are considered safe in the strong majority of cases. Nitrous oxide is administered through a nasal mask and can help children and adults alike relax, stay still, and have a more enjoyable experience in the chair. However, if you are pregnant, are allergic to certain medications or sedatives, or have nervous system issues, your dentist may not recommend using dental sedation.

This kind of treatment, which enables many patients to get the oral care they need, doesn’t have to remain in a shroud of mystery. The best resource to ask about dental sedation is your dentist. They can explain what medications are available and what they can do as well as see if you are a good candidate for sedation dentistry!
