Woman having a dental examination. Learning that you need to have a tooth extracted may cause anxiety or stress; however, this is a procedure that will help to protect your oral health and that your general dentist can often help with. Here are some common situations that may require a dental extraction and what you can expect.

Why do I Need My Tooth Extracted?

Even though a dental extraction is typically a last resort, there are some situations in which having a tooth removed will help to protect your oral health or neighboring teeth. Some common reasons for a tooth extraction are:

  • Damage from periodontal (gum) disease
  • A tooth that is severely fractured, broken, or cracked
  • Decay that has reached the nerve or pulp of your tooth
  • Wisdom teeth
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Preparation for a full denture

What is a Surgical Extraction vs Simple Extraction?

Depending on your circumstances, you may need either a simple extraction or surgical extraction. A simple extraction is when a tooth is intact above the gum line and can be removed in one piece.

A surgical extraction is required when a tooth is broken in pieces or stuck beneath the gum line (impacted). This type of extraction may need an incision and stitches, and some patients may opt for dental sedation during a surgical extraction.

How can My General Dentist Help?

Most general dentists are able to complete simple extractions in their offices, while surgical extractions may be referred to an oral surgeon to ensure the best outcome.

Your dentist will sit down with you during a consultation to discuss the extraction process, so you’ll have a clear understanding of your treatment and recovery process. Your dentist will also discuss tooth replacement options if your tooth that is being removed is not either a wisdom tooth or part of an orthodontic treatment plan.

If you feel anxious about your procedure, your consultation is also an excellent time to discuss your options for sedation. This will ensure that you feel relaxed and at ease during your extraction procedure.
