Surgical Dentistry and Sedation

November 23, 2016

Learn more about surgical dentistry and sedation before your tooth extraction. At Boyles General Dentistry, our goal is to help you preserve and maintain your natural teeth for a lifetime. That being said, there may be certain times when extracting a tooth is the best thing for your oral health. Receiving the news that you need an extraction may feel overwhelming and a little scary. With the right team like Drs. Franklin and Stephen Boyles on your side however, you have nothing to worry about. Here’s some more information about surgical dentistry and sedation.

Why Do I Need an Extraction?

There are a number of circumstances that would require a tooth to be removed such as:

  • Wisdom teeth: Third molars often crowd your healthy teeth. They may remain impacted, or stuck beneath the gum line. Wisdom teeth are harder to brush and floss due to their position at the back of your mouth, this puts you at risk for gum disease or tooth decay. For these reasons, it’s typically recommended that your wisdom teeth be removed.
  • A failing tooth: A tooth that is fractured or infected beyond the scope of what root canal therapy can restore will need to be extracted, and then replaced with a dental implant in Odessa.
  • Orthodontics: If your teeth are overly crowded, your orthodontist may recommend extractions prior to orthodontic treatment.
  • Preparation for Dentures: If most or all of your teeth are missing or failing, you may decide to restore your smile with a full denture. Preparation for your denture may require that any remaining teeth be extracted.

Will My Extraction Hurt?

Most patients are pleasantly surprised at how smooth an extraction can be. Dr. Boyles has over forty years of experience, so you can rest assured that you’re in good hand at Boyles General Dentistry. Your comfort is our top priority, and dental anesthetics will ensure that you don’t feel anything except slight pressure during your surgery.

For our patients who need extra assistance in feeling relaxed we do offer options for dental sedation. Nitrous oxide is a breathable gas that can be used to “take the edge off” during your procedure, while oral conscious sedation utilizes medication taken orally to guide you into deep relaxation. While you’ll still be responsive, you’ll have little to no memory of your appointment or procedure.

If you need a tooth extracted, we invite you to consult with our doctors first to learn more about the procedure, and discuss options for sedation if necessary. Contact us today for more information.
